Rear-Admiral Sir William Wharton (1843-1905)
A half-length portrait to the left showing Wharton in his rear-admiral's full dress uniform, 1901-04, wearing the star and neck decoration of a KCB (civil); his arms are folded. The painting is posthumous and from a photograph of about 1904.
William Wharton was a surveying officer. In 1884 he was appointed surveyor to the Navy, a post he held until retirement in 1904.
