Portrait of a mate, ca.1805
A full-length portrait, slightly to the right with head facing left, showing the unidentified sitter in mate’s uniform (1787–1812 pattern). He stands in a room before a console table on which lies his cocked hat. He appears to be wearing a presentation sword and his right hand points towards an open doorway on his left with a harbour scene and boat party beyond. The style suggests the portrait was painted in a Mediterranean port.
