'Presented to the Welsh People: H.R.H The Prince of Wales'

This print of a photograph of the then Prince of Wales Edward VIII came as a supplement to the Illustrated London News. The Herschel's prints and drawings collection appears to have become something of a chore for the later generations of the family after about 1900. Where originally the family appears to have collected prints from a range of different sources in an attempt to reflect their broad range of interests, experiences and beliefs, after about 1900 the collection almost without exception is made up of prints taken from journals to which the family were regular subscribers. It is as though they felt duty bound to continue collecting but at the same time had lost interest in the process.

This portrait of the Prince of Wales comes from the Illustrated London News, which was, as the name might suggest, an illustrated magazine full of topical stories. It was established in 1842 and was originally weekly. The magazine is still going today though is now only published bi-annually.

The photograph itself was by 'Royal Photographer in Dublin' the photography firm Lafayette, like the London Illustrated News, still trading today.
