'St Vincent rock near Bristol'

Vignette.

St Vincent rock is a geologically significant area and important for its place in the mythological story of how the Avon Gorge was formed. At the foot of the rock, and this is visible in the picture are some hot springs leading to Clifton (the surrounding area) and Hotwells in particular becoming a popular spa resort around the 18th century.

Hullmandel was an important lithographer in the 19th century with a wide circle of friends in both arts and sciences. A number of examples of his work exist within the Herschel collection.
