Portrait of a naval officer, circa 1700
A half-length portrait to the left. The sitter is shown full face in a pale puce silk coat and light brown full bottomed wig. A brown silk drape is over his forearms and with his left hand he points across his body to the shore scene in the background. A barge is pulling off towards an armed merchant ship with sweeps out. He leans against a rock with his right arm.
The ship in the background may be a privateer galley with her deck of guns, but she has not yet been satisfactorily identified.
The portrait was painted before 1707.
