The Submission of the French Frigate La Reunion to his Majesty's Frigate Crescent
This print is the companion to PAH7844 which shows 'Crescent' launching an attack on 'La Reunion'. Here Dodd portrays the French frigate, left, defeated by the British vessel.
The print is inscribed: "The Submission of the French Frigate La Reunion, to his Majesty's Frigate Crescent, Capt.n Sir Ja.s Saumarez, to whom and his Officers, the Print and its Companion, is most respectfully Inscribed, by their Obedt Servt Robt Dodd."
Immediately below the picture on the left is the inscription: "Drawn from the real ships a five days after the Action."
And below this: "English Force, Crescent, 36 Guns, 250 Men."
Immediately below the picture on the right it reads: "London Pubd 20th of Jan, 1794 by Rob. Dodd No.22 Alsop Buildings, New Road, Marylebone."
And below this: "French Force, La Reunion, 36 Guns, 320 Men and a Cutter of 12 or 14 Guns."
A longer inscription at the bottom: "It is singularly remarkable that tho' this Action lasted two Hours and twenty Minutes; there was not a Man on board the Crescent, either Killed, wounded or hurt by the Enemy. But the loss on their side was 120 in [sic] Killed and wounded, their Vessel a complete Wreck, in Hull, Sails and Rigging; Their National Colours were shot away early in the Action, and their Temporary one was also Shot down three times; and in token of Submission they brought the Remants to the Gangway, held them up and bowed over them to the gallant British Commander."
