The capture of the Spanish slave frigate Velos Passahera
A view of the action between the Spanish ‘Velos Passahera’ (left) and the British ‘Primrose’ (right), both shown in starboard quarter view. The crew of ‘Primrose’ have been depicted boarding the Spanish ship. No distinguishing features in the rest of the scene. A piece of flotsam in the foreground. Coloured aquatint.
Contrary to the inscription, in fact, the encounter and capture of the ship (the name of which is correctly spelt Veloz Passagera), took place on 7 September 1830.
Veloz Passagera had a cargo of 555 captive Africans aboard. The surviving crew was charged with piracy in England.
