HMS 'Gibraltar' at anchor in rough sea off a rocky coast

Signed by artist, but for some reason previously suggested as by Joseph (Giuseppe) Schranz, who was not generally a marine painter. The ship is shown at anchor in starboard broadside view, with topmasts sent down, riding out rough weather off a rugged and presumably Mediterranean coast with an unidentified tower on it. 'Gibraltar', a 101-gun screw-auxillary first rate was launched in 1860, served in the Mediterranean fleet but went on loan as training ship 1872, was renamed 'Grampian' in 1889 and broken up in 1899. This is a good-quality watercolour which presumably records a specific date and location in the ship's career, since it is shown flying a clear three-flag signal astern, yet to be interpreted.
