'The H.C.S. Sir David Scott Captn D.I. Ward, at the Entrance of the Straights of Sunda Feby 1830'
Print. The Indiaman 'Sir David Scott' shown at the entrance to the Sunda Strait. The February 1830 date in the title is probably incorrect since Huggins's large related oil painting, shown at the British Institution in 1832, identifies the scene as the ship's westward entrance to the Strait during its return from China in 1831. The oil painting was also in the Museuim collection until deaccessioned for condition reasons in 1997: subsequently restored for the Kelton Collection (USA) it returned to the market when sold at Christie's, London (Topographical Pictures), 29 October 2019, lot 70. For Huggins's wash study for the aquatint, see PAH8479, and for a practically identical aquatint published by him at the same time but titled as showing the Indiaman 'George the Fourth', see PAH8481. The NMM also holds two logbooks of T.A. Gib who was purser on the 'Sir David Scott' during its last four voyages. One covers the period 1825-29 when the ship was under the command of Captain John Orr MacTaggart, the other 1831-33 when the vessel was commanded by Captain David James Ward [LOG/C/6]. It is shown here on its fifth voyage, which had started from the Downs (off Deal) on 25 April 1830, sailing to Madras, the Bay of Bengal and China, returning to the Downs in May 1831. Other copies of the ship's journals, ledgers and paybooks are in the India Office records held by the British Library (L/MAR/B/33). The 1,342 ton 'Sir David Scott' first sailed for the East India Company in 1821 on a voyage to Bengal and China. Owned by Joseph Hare the vessel undertook six voyages for the Company before last returning the British waters in 1833. It spent the next four years laid-up until broken-up in 1838. [PvdM 10/19]
