Arrival of the steamship 'Gothic' at Sydney, 3 February 1954
Oil painting showing the arrival of HM The Queen and Prince Philip at Sydney from New Zealand during their post-Coronation Commonwealth tour, which lasted nearly six months in 1953-54. This was the first visit to Australia by a reigning British monarch; the extensive nationwide tour began with arrival at Sydney on 3 February and ended with departure from Fremantle on 1 April. The 'Gothic' (1947), a Shaw Savill & Albion Line cargo liner, was employed for much of the tour as the new RY 'Britannia' was still being commissioned. The royal couple employed 'Britannia' for the final leg of the tour from Torbruk in Libya to London.
The painting was commissioned from the artist by the Museum.
