'Le Francais Passager du Havre a Homfleur'' [sic; for Honfleur]
Print. 'Le Francais', a French passenger paddle-steamer between Honfleur and Le Havre, shown running in stern view towards the latter port in the distance, right (with its round tower), across the estuary of the River Seine. An American-flagged merchant ship with painted ports is running in behind and a French sailing beam-trawler is in the left foreground, with 'H2' on the sail, probably indicating a Honfleur boat. The artist was previously noted as 'C. Mazin', a misreading of the inscription, which in fact reads 'C.Mozin' for Charles Louis Mozin (Paris, 1806 - Trouville-sur-Mer, 1862) a good but now little-remembered French coastal and marine painter. The engraver was previously down as Conrad Martens but no initial appears on the plate and this is an error for Frederic Martens (1806-85), a French engraver and later a photographer. [PvdM 10/19]
