The iron steam vessels 'Baron' and 'Mimosa'
Inscribed: “The “Baron” and “Mimosa” Iron Steam Vessels. Built by J W Hoby & Co., London Works, Renfrew”. Details and dimensions of the ‘Baron’ are listed to the left of the inscription and those of ‘Mimosa’ are on the right. The view is of the Clyde with ‘Baron’ shown broadside in the centre and ‘Mimosa’ in the distance on the right.
‘Baron’’s regular run was between Glasgow and Gareloch. She was built of iron and originally had square boilers, which were not satisfactory and were changed.
She was sold to the Russians, but when they failed to pay she was returned to the Clyde and was sold to the Danes after being renamed ‘Diamond’ (A. G. H. Macpherson, H. Parker and F. C. Bowen, ‘Mail and Passenger Steamships of the Nineteenth Century…’, p.29).
