The barque Joseph Cunard
A port-broadside depiction by Samuel Walters of the British merchant barque Joseph Cunard about to pass Skerries Lighthouse off Anglesey (left background) on her delivery voyage to Liverpool. She is listed in the Lloyd's Register from 1841 onwards. Her fore mast flies the Union Jack with a white border, and her main mast flies the ‘J.P.S.’ company flag, representing Messrs. Smith & Co., of Liverpool. The signal flags on her mizzen mast appear to be as follows: 3rd distinguishing flag, followed by 2470 (based on Marryat's 'A Code of Signals for the Merchant Service' published in 1817). The gaff flies the Red Ensign. Inscribed diagonally at the bottom right corner in red: 'S. Walters / 1839'.
