The Yachts off Margate, 28 November [OS]/8 December 1677.

In the background, the bow of the ‘Mermaid’ (meermert), the ‘Greyhound’ (de grahont) and ‘Saudadoes’ (de soldate), sixth-rates and a ketch (de kidts).

In the foreground, the ‘Katherine’ (katarijn) and the ‘Mary’ (de Marije) with a standard at the masthead, and the ‘Montagu’ (de montaguie), Sir John Holmes, with the Union flag at the main, firing a salute (incorrectly inscribed in pencil Sr Robbert hooms tschip/de monteguij). In the foreground, the ‘Charles’ (de siarles), ‘Anne’ (de Anne Jacht), ‘Portsmouth’ (de Portsmout) and Navy yachts (de Navij Jachts). On the right horizon, Vice-Admiral Jan van Nes with the Dutch escort (in pencil: visd John van nes met de duitse schepen).

The drawing was copied by van de Velde in brown ink over pencil.
