The barque Mary
Port broadside view of the barque ‘Mary’ flying the British Ensign in addition to signal flags above the mainmast. Two further vessels can be seen at left. Land barely visible at right distance.
Oil painting entitled ‘The barque Mary’ by Joseph Heard. Signed and dated.
Of the barques called ‘Mary’ working out of Liverpool in 1837, there seem two likely vessels that would fit this picture: The ‘Mary’ built at Maryport in 1833 for P. Girvin, which traded to Demerara, and the ‘Mary’ of 1834, built at Bristol and owned by W. Brice, trading to Bahia.
