The brigantine Pearl
This oil painting by a Chinese artist, depicts the merchant brigantine 'Pearl', in starboard broadside view, under full sail on a starboard tack, coming into a harbour in a very calm sea. She is flying the British ensign at her gaff. Several figures can be seen on the deck. On the right of the picture, various sailing vessels are at anchor and large warehouse-type buildings can be seen crowding the shoreline, with mountains in the background. Another small sailing vessel heading to shore can be seen in the distance on the far left of the picture. The 'Pearl' was built at Bombay for the opium trade to China. [amended PvdM 2/21]
