Minesweeping in the Straits of Gibraltar, swinging out an Oropesa
Leslie Cole was appointed as a full-time, salaried war artist by the War Artist Advisory Committee in 1943, attached to the Ministry of Information and specialising in Malta and Royal Marine Subjects. He was sent to Malta in May 1943, shortly before the end of the German siege. From 1944 to 1946, he was assigned to the War Office, and travelled to Cairo, Greece and Sout East Asia.
