Temples at Pootoo, Chusan Archipelago, June 1860 (continued from PAI1335)

This sketchbook used by Admiral John Corbett describes the scene around Chushan Island and Shanghai Harbour in the early 1860s. The island of Pootoo in the Chusan Archipelago is sacred to Buddhists, the workship of Kuan Yin being its most prominent feature. There are nearly a hundred monasteries and temples on the island, with over a thousand monks. This image shows one of the temples.
