Tinghai Harbour, Chusan Island, China (continued from PAI1351)

Tinghai Harbour is the capital of Chusan Island. From this image, we can see the town traversed by canals, and the harbor surrounded by several islands. To the right is the Temple (or Joss-house) Hill, which overlooks the town and harbour close to the beach. Chusan was taken by the British forces in 1840 and 1841, and retained till 1846 as a guarantee for the fulfilment of the stipulations of the treaty. It was occupied again by the British in 1860.
