To Captain Sir Edward Hamilton...leading his men to board Hermione in the Harbour of Porto Cavallo, although defended by several Forts...

A historical depiction of the boarding of the Hermione by crew from a number of rowing boats on a calm sea. The Hermione is shown from the broad-side starboard view at the centre of the image with her sails furled. Rowing boats packed with men are located near the vessel’s stern and both sides of the bow. More of the same are featured to the right of the image; one in the foreground with oars above the water, and three in the background. Smoke from the firing of the Hermione’s cannons fills much of the vessel’s background, from which another small rowing boat appears on the right of the smoke. Forts with raised flags surround the vessel on three sides: left foreground, left background, and right background.

Inscribed: ‘To CAPTAIN SIR EDWARD HAMILTON Kt. This View of his Intrepid Conduct in leading his Men to board the HERMIONE in the Harbour of PORTO CAVALLO, although defended by several Forts’ Mounting 200 Pieces of Cannon is most respectfully Inscribed by his Obedient humble Servant Robt. Dodd.’

Captain Edward Hamilton recaptured the Hermione on October 25th, 1799. She had been handed over to the Spanish in the West Indies on 22/9/1797, when her crew mutinied.
