The 'Victory' Towed into Gibraltar after the Battle of Trafalgar (before title)
Engraved from the RA-exhibited oil of 1853 commissioned by Sir Samuel Morton Peto (the railway contractor who erected Nelson's Column) and still at his former home, Somerleyton Hall, near Lowestoft. See the 1979 Stanfield exhibition catalogue, Tyne and Wear Museums [Sunderland Art Gallery]) no. 304. Also the NMM watercolour sketch, PAH8042. This is an early impression, many being dated 1857, when the 1853 oil was one of Stanfield's exhibits at the Manchester Art Treasures exhibition, which Agnew's capitalized on to sell the print. Engraving appears to have started by Cousen in 1853 from the original. This however was then returned to Somerleyton over the Christmas holidays 1853 (see notebook field) on the understanding it would return quickly. Peto probably decided not to do so, since the plate seems to have been continued from the smaller version dated 1854, now in the Guildhall - possibly quickly painted for that purpose - and the original was only returned to Agnew's over the winter of 1854-55 prior to Cousen finishing it, according to a note from Peto to Stanfield of 6 Jan 1855 (now NMM STN/5/76).
