This print of the 'Meteor' and 'Prince of Wales' iron steam vessels... leaving the Brunswick Wharf, Blackwall... dedicated to the Directors of the Blackwall Railway Company

Print captioned 'This Print of the ''Meteor'' and "Prince of Wales" iron steam vessels... leaving the Brunswick Wharf, Blackwall...[is] dedicated to the Directors of the Blackwall Railway Company'. Brunswick Wharf and the Blackwall masthouse are on the left with masts of ships in Green's Brunswick Dock behind. The factory building of Miller and Ravenhill, engineers, appears in the centre with two paddle vessels on the stocks in front of it. The Greens had sold the land for the railway terminus to the Blackwall Railway Company in 1835, the building being designed by W. Tite FRS.

The 'Meteor' and 'Prince of Wales' were built at Ditchburn and Mare's Orchard Yard at Bow Creek in the 1840s. Vessels such as these operated passenger services between Gravesend in Kent and Brunswick Wharf in Blackwall. There were several other London to Gravesend passenger services. The first had been started in 1815 by the Clyde-built paddle steamer 'Marjory' (1814), the first steamship to make its appearance on the Thames.
