Honble Samuel Barrington Admiral of the White

A half-length portrait of Samuel Barrington (1729–1800) in flag officer’s full-dress uniform, 1767–1783. The portrait is surrounded by a decorative border with the sitter’s coat of arms at the top. Lettered underneath the image with the title: ‘Honble. Samuel Barrington, Admiral of the White. Presented to Greenwich Hospital by the Hon. Shute, Bishop of Durham.’ Also lettered with the production details and publication line: ‘Painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds, P. R. A. / Engraved by H. T. Ryall. / The London Printing and Publishing Company Limited.’ This portrait was engraved by Henry Thomas Ryall after an original painting by Joshua Reynolds in the Greenwich Hospital Collection (see BHC2534). As the inscription on this print records, Reynolds’s portrait was presented to Greenwich Hospital by the sitter’s younger brother Shute Barrington, Bishop of Durham. This print was published by the London Printing and Publishing Company. It is a later reprint, with added decorative border, from the plate engraved for E. H. Locker's 'Memoirs of Celebrated Naval Commanders...' (1831) and originally published by Harding and Lepard on 1 June 1831. (Updated April 2019.)
