A Schooner and a Dutch Vessel close hauled in a fresh breeze in St Helier's Bay, Jersey, 1846

Herbert, the son of a Thames waterman was apprenticed to a boat builder. He exhibited marine subjects at the Society of British Artists from 1844 and at the Royal Academy 1847-60. These suggest that he visited Suffolk, Holland, Belgium and France as well as the Channel Islands. His background and his evident knowledge of shipping suggest that he may himself have sailed to these places. The watercolour is signed and dated 1846.
