'The Offering of an Ex-Voto'

Titled either 'L'Ex-Voto' or 'L'Offrande d'un Ex-Voto', this shows a bare-footed Breton sailor placing a votive ship model as an offering against the hazards of the sea in the chapel of Saint-Tugen, Primelin, as his family and others watch and pray behind. Primelin is west of Quimper and Audierne, heading out to the Pointe du Raz, (Finistere). The original oil painting of 1898, by Henri [Paul] Royer (1869-1938), a French painter best known for his genre Breton scenes, is in the Musee des Beaux Arts, Quimper. This etching appears to be the cover illustration from the magazine, 'La France Illustree' no. 1336 (1900, though exact date as yet uncertain) published when it commented on the10th anniversary exhibition at the Grand Palais des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in which the work was included.
