Admiral Earl St Vincent

A half-length portrait of John Jervis, Earl of St Vincent (1752–1820) in admiral’s full-dress uniform, 1795–1812, with the ribbon and star of the Order of the Bath and a flag officer’s gold medal for the Battle of Cape St Vincent. He holds a telescope close to his body in his right hand and tucks his left in his sash. Lettered beneath the imae with the title, ‘Admiral Earl St. Vincent. From a Portrait by Hoppner.’ Also lettered with the production and publication details: ‘W. Greatbatch sculpt. / London, Richard Bentley & Son 1878.’ This portrait was engraved by William Greatbatch after John Hoppner’s full-length portrait of 1808–9. Hoppner’s painting was commissioned by the Prince of Wales (later George IV) for his residence at Carlton House and it remains in the Royal Collection to this day. This print was published by Richard Bentley & Son in 1878. It is a reprint, with amended title and publication, from the plate originally published by Richard Bentley in 1836 (see PAD3359).
