Ship's bell

Ship's bell. Inscribed on one side: 'S S EUPHRATE MM MARSEILLE ÉCHOUE LE 11 7BRE 1915 A RAS RADRESSA SOCOTRA' (flanked by crossed French and British ensigns. Other side 'OFFERT AU CAPITIANE J M MAIN SAUVITAGE DE 496 PERSONNES S S CITY OF NAGPUR'. Given to John Mennons Main (1862-1931) Master of the 'City of Nagpur' for his part in rescuing the passengers and crew of the French liner 'Euphrate' 1905, after the vessel ran aground at the entrance to the Red Sea in 1915.
