Britannia

Cream or white-painted figurehead of the schooner 'Britannia', latterly of Littlehampton. It represents a three-quarter-length female figure of Britannia in a mail coat and helmet. The right arm is held across the breast, the left straight down the left side. The ship was a schooner of 107 feet long, 186 tons, official no. 51325, built by Kinlock of Garmouth, Scotland. She was in Garmouth ownership until at least 1878; Sunderland ownership in 1880 and probably in that area until 1898 when her ownership was in Hartlepool. In 1900 she was bought by Joseph Robinson of Littlehampton, Sussex. In 1903 he owned seven vessels and all seven of his sons (out of twelve children) sailed in them. S.D. Robinson is noted as master of the 'Britannia' in 1902 and the ship last appears in Lloyd's Register in 1911. The figurehead was placed on loan to NMM in 1950 by Joseph Robinson's granddaughter, Mrs R. Davies, and presented by her in 1975.
