Official boat badge of HMS Dryad
The boat badge of HMS 'Dryad' 1919. The first official design, approved in November 1924. On a field red, an oak sprig proper with gold acorns, over which is a pair of dividers. Dryads were tree nymphs, the name derived from the Greek 'Drys' an oak. The badge is diamond-shaped with a gold rope twist border representing an auxiliary. It is made of cast brass, painted and drilled at the corners. 'DRYAD' is inscribed on the reverse. HMS 'Dryad' was a navigation school from 1919, the dividers in reference to navigation. It moved in 1941 from Portsmouth Dockyard to Southwick House. A new badge was issued in 1950.
