Official boat badge of HMS Carlisle
The boat badge of HMS 'Carlisle' 1918. An official pattern introduced in 1920. It depicts a field gold, with a cross pattée, thereon a rose gold (part of the arms of the city taken from the seal). The badge is a pentagonal shape with a gold rope twist border representing a cruiser. It is made of cast brass, painted and drilled at the corners. 'CARLISLE ' is inscribed on the reverse. HMS 'Carlisle' was a C-class cruiser. In 1940 she became the first naval vessel to be equipped with an anti-aircraft fire control radar sytem. In the early stages of the Second World War she assisted in the evacuation of British Somaliland. She was then deployed to the Mediterranean and took part in the Battle of Matapan and the first and second battles of Sirte. In 1943, she provided support for allied landings in Sicily. After serious damage inflicted by enemy aircraft, she spent the last years of the war as a base ship in Alexandria and was broken up in 1949.
