Terrestrial globe gores

Terrestrial globe gores. Geographical details on the gores are the same as Repogle, GLB0192, but updated to include 'Fletchers Ridge' above the Canadian Basin, which is now labelled 'ALPHA CORDILLERA'. The label for the cease-fire line in Vietnam is changed into 'Demarcation Line, July 22 1954'.

There are many symbols, including, for example, those of the principle navigable canals, for depth curves and soundings. On a small circular disc pasted on the North Pole, there are labels for 'Peary 1909', 'Byrd 1926' and 'USS Nautilus 1958'. In the north polar region is the note: 'Greenland resembles / an ice filled bowl / rimmed by coastal ranges. / In some places the ice is more than 11.000 feet thick'. On a small circular disc pasted on the South Pole, there labels for 'Amundsen 1911', 'Scott 1912' and 'Byrd 1929'.The location of the south magnetic pole is marked and labelled.

There are three geophysical comments, including, for instance, one in the south polar region. There are two political notes, including, for example, one that reads: 'All nations with claims to Antarctic territory / have signed a treaty declaring the / continent an international preserve / for scientific research'. A total of five oceans are named. For full details about the cartography and construction of these gores please refer to the related publication, Globes at Greenwich.
