Portrait of a Naval Captain

A small full-length portrait of naval captain, apparently in the 1774-87 undress uniform though the buttons are regularly spaced (rather than in threes for a senior captain, twos for a junior), and with an elaborately embroidered waistcoat with lapels overlapping those of the coat. Turned slightly to his right he holds his hat and the top of his cane in his right hand. His dog lies behind him against a wooded background to sitter's left and his ship to his right. The picture was presented to the Museum in 1991 and has been suggested, based on likeness, that it may show Captain Alexander Schomberg (1720-1804): this, and the received attribution to Downman (for whom it does not seem good enough) both require further work.
