Mr Pond
Aquatint. After a painting by Thomas Parkinson from around 1787. It is in a window mount and oak frame (measuring 380 x 510 mm). This picture of a Mr Pond wearing a hat and coat and white scarf was thought for many years to have been of the Astronomer Royal John Pond. Recent research however has shown that the Mr Pond in the picture was in fact a livery-stable keeper of Newmarket and well-known as the compiler of the Racing Calendar. Moreover, a letter from Thomas Bradley, Astronomer Royal Pond's brother in law to R. H. Major tells us that 'no likeness whatever exists of my late brother in law Mr Pond except perhaps a small silhouette in black paper but whether that remains or where it is I know not'.
