Messina Earthquake Medal
Awarded to Engineer Lieutenant Harold Hugh Huxham (1881-1968). Obverse: Head of King Victor Emmanuel III (left). Legend: 'VITTORIO EMANUELE III RE D'ITALIA'. Reverse: Inscription within an oak wreath tied with a bow: 'MEDAGLIA COMMEMORATIVA TERREMOTO CALABRO-SICULO 28 DICEMBRE 1908'. Mounted on a bar with four others.
Whilst serving in HMS 'Euryalus' Engineer Lieutenant Harold Hugh Huxham helped aid survivors of the 1908 Messina earthquake. In 1917 he was awarded the DSO for services in vessels of the Harwich Force - notably 'Redgauntlet'. He retired in 1936 with the rank of Rear-Admiral but was recalled in 1939 with his old rank of Engineer Captain and served throughout the Second World War. He married Flora Dallas in Plymouth during 1905.
