Distinguished Service Cross 1936-47

Distinguished Service Cross awarded to Captain Clifford Rowland Baxter for action at Dunkirk in the London and North Eastern Railway Company’s (L & N.E.R.) steamer ‘Prague’. Under the command of Captain Baxter ‘Prague’ entered Dunkirk on 29 May 1940 and left for Folkestone where she disembarked 2000 troops. She returned to Dunkirk on 30 May arriving back at Folkestone with 1039 troops. On 1 June she again entered Dunkirk and embarked about 3000 French troops. The ship was then attacked by German dive-bombers and suffered severe damage. The majority of the troops were transferred to the sloop ‘Scimitar’ and the paddle steamer ‘Queen of Thanet’ while underway. The ‘Prague’ was taken in tow by the tug ‘Lady Brassey’ and beached off Sandown Castle, Deal.

The medal is in the form of a plain silver cross pattee, convexed. In the centre of the obverse is the Royal Cypher and on the reverse is the date, ‘1940’. It is suspended from a blue ribbon with a central white stripe and is held with its fitted box of issue.
