War Medal 1939-45
Awarded to Chief Engineer Alfred Tierney Gibson (1887-1957). Obverse: head of King George VI. Legend: 'GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX : F : D : INDIAE : IMP'. Reverse: A lion standing (left) on a prostrate dragon, its right paw resting on the latter's head. Inscription above: '1939 1945'. Fitted with a bar and blue ribbon with wide red borders and a narrow central red stripe with white borders.
Alfred Tierney Gibson was born in Gateshead, the son of William Gibson, a master mariner. The family moved to Newport, South Wales shortly afterwards. He was active in the Merchant Service during both world wars, joining the Freemasons Lodge in Port Chalmers, New Zealand in 1916. During World War II he worked as Chief Engineer on ‘Dominion Monarch’ (Shaw, Savill & Albion) - a passenger and refrigerated cargo ship which carried troops, frozen food and mail between Australasia and the United Kingdom. He was made a Commander of the British Empire for this service in 1945.
He married Dora Ireland on 26 August 1921 near Newport and died in Greenwich, London.
