Frederick Semple (1833-1872) was on board HMS 'Victory', then moored in Portsmouth Harbour, in order to take his Lieutenant's examination. While he was waiting his turn, a passing ship's boat capsized. Semple jumped in from the bottom of the accommodation ladder and grabbed the one female casualty by the hair - she turned out to be the wife of a marine. He managed to grab a rope with the other hand until both were pulled out.
