House flag, Deutsche Afrika-Linien

House flag of the Deutsche Afrika-Linien. A yellow rectangular flag bearing a red diamond in the centre with a white inner and black outer border. The flag is made of a wool and synthetic fibre bunting. It has a cotton hoist and is machine sewn. A rope and clip is attached.

The company began its services as the Deutsche Ost-Afrika Linie in 1890. It received a subsidy from the German Government to provide direct services for passengers, mail and cargo to East Africa. Services were expanded to West and South Africa and an operating agreement made with the Hamburg Amerika Line. The company was taken over by tanker-owner John T. Essberger in 1941. It is today part of a group owned by the same family and runs a liner service to Southern Africa and container services to East Africa and the islands of the Indian Ocean.
