Bengal Pilot Service uniform
Double breasted coat of navy blue wool of the Bengal Pilot Service belonging to Robert Rust. The buttons and branch insignia on the shoulder feature the Star of India. The lapels are faced with blue Irish poplin and the gold distinction lace on the sleeves features woven purple silk stripes.
The Bengal Pilot Service was part of the Indian Marine (which became the Royal Indian Marine in 1892). Initially, the Indian Marine was called the the Bombay Marine was the fighting navy of the East India Company. It was renamed the Indian Navy in 1830. This was changed again in 1863 to the Bombay Marine and in 1877, the Bombay Marine was combined with the Bengal Marine to become the Indian Marine.
