Thirty-hour pocket watch, with inscriptions including 'R.G.S. Explorers' and Travellers' Watertight Watch' - in silver case and a two-tier mahogany deck-watch box. Maker Emil Nielson [?], supplied by S. Smith & Sons Ltd, Strand, London. The full cover inscription reads 'ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION. / PRESENTED TO COMR. R.F. SCOTT. / by / S.SMITH & SONS / 9. STRAND LONDON. / This WATCH having been his / never failing COMPANION / during his VOYAGE on the / Discovery. / 1901 - 1905.' As the Royal Geographical Society's initials in the branding indicate, this was a robust model intended for expedition use.
