China
A relic of Sir John Franklin's last expedition 1845-8. A fragment of tin-glazed, blue painted earthenware, found at Northern Cairn, Cape Felix on 3rd July 1879 by the Schwatka Search Expedition 1878-9. W.H. Gilder 'Schwatka's search' p. 133 'three miles south of Cape Felix, was what appeared to be a torn-down cairn, and a quantity of canvas and course red woollen stuff, showing that there had been a permanent camping place…a piece of an ornamented china tea-cup, and cans of preserved potatoes showed that it was in charge of an officer.' This is presumably the campsite found by McClintock who mentions ’several pieces of broken basins or cups, blue and white Delfware [sic]’ among the articles he did not bring away. It had occupied by twelve officers and men from the Franklin expedition in the summer of 1847.
