Royal Mail pennant
A Royal Mail pennant. It is made of white wool and nylon bunting with a printed Queen's Crown and post horn motif in the centre and the inscription 'ROYAL MAIL' in red. The details of the design are outlined in black.
This pennant was introduced in 1884 at the same time as the 'Father Time' ensign to distinguish mail carrying ships not belonging to H.M. Government and carrying mail under contract with the British, Dominion or Colonial Post Office. The design of the crown was changed with the accession of Edward VII in 1901 and again in 1952 after the accession of Queen Elizabeth II.
