Iron yard hoop with eye

An iron yard hoop with eye from the 1845 Northwest Passage Expedition led by Sir John Franklin. The hoop has the broad arrow stamped on it.

The yard hoop was recovered by the US expedition under Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka between 1878-1880. It is described as 'Item 11. An iron yard ring found on Adelaide Peninsula' in the 1881 catalogue of items that he sent back to Britain in 1881 [TNA, ADM 1/6600].

Schwatka's expedition possibly found this in the possession of Inuit camped west of Stewart's Monument, Hayes River around 15-17 May 1879. Gilder records 'We obtained from them a few trifling relics of the Erebus and Terror, in exchange for knives and needles.' [Gilder, pages 77-78]. The other possible location is the Inuit camp at Wilmot Bay, visited on 15-17 November 1879 by Schwatka, as he mentions 'Among them we found a few relics from various places' [Schwatka, page 101]. It is possibly from the vessel the Inuit reported finding off Grant Point.

The yard hoop was displayed at the Royal Naval Museum, Greenwich, in 'Case 3, No. 3. Iron yard hoop, found in Adelaide Peninsula.' It was also in Display 14 in the Royal Naval Exhibition at Chelsea in 1891.
