House flag, Geest Line Ltd

The house flag of Geest Line Ltd, Boston, Lincolnshire. A rectangular white flag with horizontal blue stripes near the top and bottom edges. In the centre is a red-bordered yellow diamond bearing a red cursive 'G'. The flag is made of synthetic fibre fabric with a cotton hoist. It is machine sewn and a rope is attached.

The Van Geest family began as market gardeners in the Netherlands exporting produce to Great Britain. Geest set up a British company in 1935 and acquired land in Lincolnshire. They began chartering ships to carry their fruit and vegetables after the Second World War and formed their own shipping company in 1964. Also during the 1950’s they moved into the import of bananas, beginning commercial voyages between Europe and the West Indies in 1957. Their ships, some of which could accommodate up to 12 passengers, were taken over by Elders & Fyffes in 1996. General cargo was also carried on outward trip to the Caribbean. The service is maintained today with a wide range of break bulk and containerised cargo carried on the weekly westbound departures, which sail from Portsmouth and also Le Havre in France.
The Netherlands Company of Walling Van Geest en Zonen also used the Geest line flag. (research by Inderjeet Deusi)
