Teaplate

Earthenware plate with a blue rim, transfer-printed in blue with the Bethel flag, the maker's mark on the base. The plate comes from the premises of the former Plymouth Dock and Stonehouse Soldiers and Seamen's Friend Society and Bethel Union (1820-1980). It was given to Alston Kennerley by Mrs Campbell, former owner of this establishment. The Bethel flag was used to signal services held on board ship from 1816 and by most Bethel Societies during a period of religious revival among merchant seaman. As part of a movement started by George Charles Smith, local seamen's friend societies were started around the country, most based on a community centre.
