In the late 18th century, West Indian possessions were economically important to Denmark. To dissuade Denmark from entering an alliance with France, in March 1801 (shortly before the Battle of Copenhagen) Admiral Duckworth landed an army of 4,000 marines at St Thomas. The Danish Islands capitulated.
