Punch and Judy puppet: the Hangman

A glove puppet, part of a Punch and Judy set belonging to puppeteer Peter Butchard (1909-2009). The character represented is probably the hangman. The puppet has a wooden head and hands, legs and feet, carved and painted. The hair is made of black wool fabric with a curly knap. The figure has a red nose and a grim expression. The body is made of machine-sewn wool fabric. The separate legs are clad in striped red and yellow breeches, the yellow stripes with zig-zag decoration sewn on. The figure wears a long black coat made of twill-woven fabric with red bands round the sleeves. The head and hands are attached to the fabric body with steel tacks. A brass curtain ring is sewn to the back to hang the puppet up.
