Royal Naval Reserve uniform: pattern 1891–1901
A lieutenant's cocked hat, of black beaver edged with black silk ribbon with an oak and acorn leaf pattern. The front of the hat has a single twist of gold braid, passing over a black silk cockade, and secured by a gilt button. The button features a crown above a foul anchor and the letters RNR. At each end is a tassel, of five gold bullions above five gold and five blue bullion eyes, secured to the edge of the hat. Inside, the edge of the hat features a 6cm band of kid skin. The crown is lined with cherry coloured silk. The hat is in a badly scratched metal box, painted black and brown with the remnants of labels. The hat belonged to Daniel Dow, who was a lieutenant in the RNR during the 1890s but who subsequently dropped out. Daniel (Fairweather) Dow was captain of the Lusitania although sent on leave just before her sinking see 'Lusitania saga and mystery' David Ramsey.
