A lieutenant's cocked hat, of black beaver edged with black silk ribbon with an oak and acorn leaf pattern. That front of the hat has a single twist of gold braid, passing over a black silk cockade, and secured by a gilt button. The button features a crown above a foul anchor and the letters RNR.

At each end is a tassel, of five gold bullions above five gold and five blue bullion eyes, secured to the edge of the hat. Inside, the edge of the hat features a 6cm band of kid skin. The crown is lined with cherry coloured silk. The hat is in a badly scratched metal box, painted black and brown with the remnants of labels. The hat belonged to Daniel Dow, who was a lieutenant in the RNR during the 1890s but who subsequently dropped out.
