Naval Gold Medal (Flag Officer's) for the Battle of Cape St Vincent 1797
Gold medal presented to Vice-Admiral Charles Thompson (1740-1799) for services at the Battle of St Vincent, 1797. Obverse: Britannia, a spear in her left hand and a shield below, standing on the deck of an antique galley, her right foot resting on a helmet, crowned with a wreath by a winged victory. Reverse inscribed within a wreath of oak and laurel: 'CHARLES THOMPSON ESQUIRE VICE ADMIRAL AND SECOND IN COMMAND ON THE 14TH FEB: MDCCXCVII THE SPANISH FLEET DEFEATED'. In a fitted red leather case with blue and white silk neck ribbon attached. Both sides of the medal are glazed to protect the surface.
